There are some great new boards on the way this summer. The Bobsled from McTavish is a great little board that is super easy to paddle onto a wave but will still tear a wave apart. They are due into store early October, but I think one may just slip into the back of my van for a quick run down the coast.
Fanatic are producing a few bamboo models this year that look absolutely beautiful. There are sizes range from 7′6″, 8′ and 9′1″ and the bamboo not only looks good but offers higher strength than fibreglass.
Stand Up Paddling
Holy mackerel there are some cool boards on the way. The new flat water / down winders are so much fun to paddle. I was just in Maui and did some down winders in 20-30 knots (40-50kms) of wind and it was awesome fun. These boards cruise so easily and pick up little runners with effortless glide.
The all-round boards are still the best bet for beginners or families as they can do anything from Lake Burley to catching a few waves down the coast. Don’t go too short to cruise but if you only want to surf then start around ten foot with a bit of width.
