“Jay and I have recently had to have both our boats repaired after accidents on and off the water. I know a few others have had their boats worked on recently too and wanted to make sure everyone knew there was someone locally (in our club) who is easily accessible and who can do the repair work.
James Suthern, the BGCC white water convener, is now doing boat repairs. We just got Jay’s Epic V10 Ultra back and it looks fantastic. She hit a log and bent and cracked the rudder and housing which has all been fixed. It also got dropped and had damage to the seam and gel/flow coat which has also been repaired. James did such a great job that you can’t tell it was worked on, even when you know where to look.
James has also recently done some work for the club boats and other members’ craft. Each piece of work I’ve seen looks great, feels solid and hasn’t required a revisit. He is focussing on fibreglass, Kevlar and carbon repair work so if you need anything like that, I recommend calling into Wetspot Water Sports and catching him at his day job.
That I know of there are two alternatives commonly used for those of us who don’t know how to do the repair work (or don’t have the tools) ourselves. They are both out of town and come with drawbacks. One is a panel beater in Queanbeyan who is not used to working with kayaks and the other is a gentleman in Sydney who is hard to get onto and extremely slow in getting the work done.
Other work you can have done at Wetspot includes:
- Servicing and fixing rudders, skegs and other add-ons;
- Plastic welding cracks or self-service mishaps on all types of plastic boats; and
- Fitting all sorts of accessories.
So best of luck for dodging the logs on our river and if you need a hand to get anything fixed, I’d start with James on time trial nights or in at Wetspot.
